Jessica Somers - Odanak Abenaki

Jessica Somers is an Odanak Abenaki artist born in Sudbury, Ontario, and currently residing in Lavigne, Ontario. Her artistic journey has been shaped by the influence of her family, particularly her grandmother, who enjoyed creating scenic and wildlife paintings, and her father, whose dedication, craftsmanship, and strong work ethic continue to inspire her creative practice.

Jessica's artwork is deeply rooted in the knowledge, stories, and teachings passed down through generations. Inspired by the wisdom of Elders within her community and Nation, she creates paintings that reflect Indigenous teachings and the interconnectedness of the natural world. Through her art, she honours her ancestors while helping to preserve and share cultural knowledge for future generations.

For Jessica, art is a powerful form of self-reflection, storytelling, and education. Her work explores themes of peace, personal growth, moral teachings, and cultural identity. She views art as an expression of survivance—a way of preserving history, carrying forward stories, embodying traditional ways of life, and celebrating Indigenous identities.

Through her thoughtful and meaningful creations, Jessica Somers continues to share the teachings, values, and enduring strength of her Abenaki heritage.
