Maxine Noel is an acclaimed Indigenous visual artist of Santee and Oglala heritage, born on the Birdtail Reserve in Manitoba. Renowned for her distinctive artistic style and powerful storytelling, her work can be found in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including the Canadian Museum of History, the University of Western Ontario, the Canadian Native Arts Foundation, and the Whetung Ojibwa Centre.

Throughout her career, Maxine has used her art to promote understanding, connection, and respect among diverse cultures. Her work reflects a belief in the shared humanity that unites people across backgrounds and traditions, fostering dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Maxine is recognized for her commitment to social advocacy and community empowerment. One of her most meaningful works, Not Forgotten, honours Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). Royalties from the artwork are donated to the Native Women's Association of Canada, supporting awareness and advocacy efforts. The piece also played an important role in the 2019 Artists Against Racism campaign along British Columbia's Highway of Tears, drawing attention to the ongoing impact of violence against Indigenous women and girls.

A respected artist, mentor, and advocate, Maxine's dedication, resilience, and generosity continue to inspire others. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to Canadian art and society, she was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2018.
